For 22 year old Kerli Kõiv, life is good. The Estonian pop stars debut album, 'Love Is Dead' (Island Def Jam) has received substantial notice in Europe, charted on the Billboard 200 and slowly been emerging in the North American market as an album to take notice of. Being compared to such successful artists as Icelandic pixie, Bjork and Russia's t.A.T.u., Kerli's sound ranges from the sweetness of electro-pop to outright gritty rock.
First stepping into the public spotlight in 2002 as the winner of Fizz Superstar (an American Idol-like singing competition of 3 Baltic countries), She was given the opportunity to audition for industry mogul, L.A. Reid in '06, who signed her on the spot.
Released July 8th, 2008, 'Love Is Dead' reached the #2 position on Billboard's Heatseeker chart, #19 on Billboard's Top Digital downloads chart and was certified platinum in her home country (along with a number 1 position on the Estonian charts) .
Everything from the album artwork to Kerli's music videos being highly stylized, critics have viewed the young star in a category all her own, Rick Florino from ARTISTdirect saying, "Love Is Dead is more than just "alternative music;" it's alternative art."
Though not picking up enough steam in the North American market to yet make her a household name, Kerli's debut has received enough world-wide attention to warrant the production of a follow-up, with an expected release sometime in 2010.
